What is Comprehensive Body Composition Analysis (DEXA)?
Dual-energy-X-ray-absorption (DEXA) is an imaging technique that uses low doses of radiation to measure body composition with high precision. Unlike BMI and basic impedance, DEXA distinguishes between bone, fat and lean tissues to provide regional and entire-body details that can inform medical evaluations and training plans.
Wellness Worx provides DEXA services that involve two combined assessments:
- Body composition analysis includes fat mass, lean mass, regional distribution, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) assessments.
- A bone density scan measures the bone mineral density (BMD) of clinically relevant areas (often the lumbar spine and hips) to assess osteoporosis status and fracture risk using standardized indices.
We adhere to established processes to provide trustworthy, interpretable results and transform findings into clear, actionable advise customized to your objectives.
Is DEXA Body Composition Right for Me?
DEXA provides objective insights that go beyond the scale. It can be used to set a baseline composition, monitor changes, determine bone density and osteoporosis risks, customize performance using regional data, or plan weight/metabolic goal with accurate tissue measurements.

The Science Behind DEXA
DEXA uses two low-dose X‑ray energy levels to differentiate bone, fat, and lean tissues with high precision. Standard clinical assessments focus on the hips and lumbar spine to estimate fracture risk, while whole‑body scans and select peripheral sites may be used in specific cases. Although some centers use quantitative CT (QCT) for bone assessment, DXA remains the gold standard for bone mineral density (BMD) measurement and also provides regional and total‑body composition values with T and Z scores for clinical interpretation.
DEXA measures body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, and bone density, helping you track fat loss versus muscle loss to ensure healthy weight change. It identifies imbalances such as one side of the body having more muscle than the other, and is useful for setting realistic goals tailored to your needs. These outputs include total and regional fat and lean mass, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) estimates, appendicular indexes, and percent body fat

How DEXA Helps
DEXA provides clear, objective measurements you can use to take practical action. It provides an accurate snapshot of your status, rather than just a number on a scale. These details can help you and the rest of your team to identify priority areas, such as addressing visceral fat, promoting bone health, building or maintaining lean mass or supporting bone health.
The scan can identify regional trends and asymmetries that are missed by other methods. DEXA also allows for consistent tracking of key markers over time. Repeat assessments allow you to see if changes in diet, training or clinical care have a positive impact on key markers.
This data can be used to adjust program intensity, macronutrient distribution or volume. It also examines bone health and metabolic risk. DEXA provides you with actionable data and a repeatable procedure to help you make informed decisions at every step of your fitness and health journey.

Sports Performance Optimization
Competitive athletes across track and field, powerlifting, and endurance sports; bodybuilders and strength trainers; marathon runners and cyclists; fighters in MMA, boxing, and wrestling who need weight‑class optimization; and coaches and trainers designing custom performance plans all benefit from DEXA. The scan helps fine‑tune training, diet, and recovery by mapping muscle mass distribution across arms, legs, and core to uncover strength imbalances, target weak areas, and avoid asymmetries that may lead to injury.
It also provides precise body‑fat percentages to keep athletes within their sport‑specific ranges, informing nutrition and training that maximize lean mass while maintaining essential fat for endurance and recovery and avoiding unhealthy weight cutting with gradual, sustainable fat loss.
Longevity and Health Span
DEXA helps optimize your life span (quality of life as you age) by providing data on body composition for healthy aging, visceral fat, and metabolic health. By measuring lean muscle mass versus fat mass, DEXA helps prevent sarcopenia, age‑related muscle loss linked to frailty and falls, and supports an optimal muscle to fat ratio that reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
It identifies visceral fat, a key risk factor for metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and insulin resistance, and guides strategies to reduce unhealthy fat while preserving lean tissue for longevity.
By tracking composition rather than relying on BMI alone, DEXA helps you maintain a healthy weight range and can help prevent metabolic slowdown with aging, enabling proactive, informed adjustments over time.
Weight and Metabolic Health
For those on GLP‑1 therapy, monitoring body composition changes is essential. DEXA provides an in‑depth analysis of fat loss, muscle retention, and metabolic improvements to ensure you’re losing the right kind of weight while maintaining lean mass. With precise tracking of fat loss versus muscle loss, VAT reduction, and other key markers, DEXA equips you to optimize your weight‑loss strategy with real data.
If you’re on GLP‑1 medications or considering them, a DEXA scan is the best way to measure your body transformation and guide adjustments to nutrition, training, and recovery. With a clear understanding of your current situation, you may modify your caloric and macronutrient approaches while keeping an eye on the indicators that are most important for metabolic health.
During weight-loss stages, frequent evaluations can assist you maintain lean mass while losing fat mass.
Bone Density & Osteoporosis Prevention
A DEXA scan for longevity and bone health is especially valuable for aging adults (particularly 50+), athletes tracking muscle and fat distribution, women post‑menopause, individuals with a family history of osteoporosis, and anyone focused on long‑term health optimization. As bone density naturally declines with age, DEXA, true bone density scanning, serves as the gold standard for early detection of osteoporosis and osteopenia by measuring BMD to assess fracture risk before serious bone loss occurs and by informing calcium, vitamin D, and resistance‑training strategies that strengthen bones.
Ongoing DEXA monitoring tracks changes in bone density over the years to fine‑tune diet, exercise, and supplementation, which is especially useful for those at higher risk such as postmenopausal women, older adults, athletes, and people with low body weight. The results also guide weight‑bearing and resistance exercise prescriptions to stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss.
The Wellness Worx Approach
We don’t use a one-size fits all protocol. We review your medical records, medications and goals before recommending DEXA. We will explain if the scan is recommended how it fits into your overall plan, and what practical steps we can take to implement results immediately. From preparation to scanning to reviewing results, you can expect to receive clear communication.
What to Expect During Your DEXA Visit
Pre-scan consultation: Before your DEXA exam, we will conduct a safety review, discuss your goals, and provide preparation guidance. Please inform your technician and provider if you suspect you may be pregnant. Let us know about any recent barium studies, radioisotope scans, or contrast-enhanced CTs, as the timing of these tests may affect scheduling. If you are having a bone density test, avoid calcium supplements for at least 24 hours prior to the exam.
Scan session: On the day of your scan, wear loose, comfortable clothing free of metal; you may be asked to change into a gown. During the scan, you will lie still on your back while the scanner passes overhead. For body composition, the scan evaluates whole-body tissue distribution. The procedure is non-invasive, quick, and uses very low levels of ionizing radiation.
Post-scan review: After the scan, we will review your results, including bone density, fat and lean mass distribution, and T or Z scores if applicable, along with estimates of visceral adipose tissue (if included). We will also provide practical recommendations based on your results and create a follow-up schedule to monitor changes over time.
